Hi Peter,

I forward you the email I sent to the student. The original choice lists we used are written in PHP and can
only be displayed properly when connected with our web server. Therefore I described those choice lists
in words as detailed as possible.
Together with figure 5.1 in the paper and the demonstration attached, we should be able to recreate all
the questions.

Best,
Yu

FORWARD BEGIN:

Hi Giang,

If you look at Figure 5.1 in the paper, we gave an example of the choice list. All the choice lists look the
same, except the starting and ending point. In the example, the starting point is 1 week and the ending
point is 13 weeks.
The five choice lists look like this:
Q1: starting point is 1 week and ending point is 52 weeks. [so you elicited c_1/2 from this question]
Q2: starting point is 1 week and ending point is c_1/2 weeks. [so you elicited c_1/4 from this question]
Q3: starting point is c_1/2 weeks and ending point is 52 weeks. [so you elicited c_3/4 from this question]
Q4: starting point is 1 week and ending point is c_1/4 weeks. [so you elicited c_1/8 from this question]
Q5: starting point is c_3/4 weeks and ending point is 52 weeks. [so you elicited c_7/8 from this question]

The two questions to test separability are:
QS1: starting point is c_1/4 weeks and ending point is c_3/4 weeks. [so you elicited s_1/2 from this
question. Separability holds if s_1/2=c_1/2]
QS2: this choice list looks different from others. See attachment for demonstration.

Hi Yu,

Could you send the stimuli that this student asks for?

Thanks, Peter

Dear Professor,

My name is Giang Tran, I am a student at Maastricht University. I have read your forthcoming
paper "Measuring Discounting without Measuring Utility" and I am very interested in the Direct
Method (DM).

I would like to ask if I could receive the choice lists of all the five questions you used to measure
discounting using the DM, and also of the two questions to test separability, in Part 1.

Thank you very much in advance!

Best regards,
Giang
